Tapestries in Spiritual Spaces: Sacred Atmosphere, Altars & Meaningful Design
By Alicia Anspaugh & Staff
Surprising question—but one I’ve gotten off and on for years, and then again recently, so I decided to put some thoughts down for posterity 😄
Yes, absolutely—you can use a tapestry in your spiritual or sacred space.
In fact, I think they’re a wonderful addition.
They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, symbols, and themes, making them one of the easiest ways to shift the atmosphere and energy of a room quickly.
They’re especially wonderful if:
you move often
travel frequently
have a temporary altar setup
live in an apartment
share a space with others
or just want a flexible spiritual setup
They also complement permanent sacred spaces beautifully.
And honestly?
They’re washable 😆
A personal favorite feature of mine for anyone living real life with kids, pets, paint, coffee, incense ash, or general chaos.
🌙 Why Use Tapestries in a Sacred Space?
One of the reasons I began carrying tapestries at Des Moines New Age Shop was because people were looking for meaningful ways to represent:
deities
spiritual concepts
elemental energies
celestial themes
sacred geometry
meditation spaces
and personal spiritual paths
without needing an elaborate or expensive setup.
Humans naturally connect through symbols and imagery.
A tapestry can become:
a focal point for meditation
a visual anchor for intention
a devotional piece
or simply something that makes a room feel spiritually alive and comforting
🔮 Sacred Space Does NOT Have to Be Complicated
This is important.
You do not need:
a giant altar
expensive tools
rare ritual items
or an entire room dedicated to spirituality
Sometimes sacred space is simply:
a candle
a crystal
an oracle card
a meaningful object
a small shelf
a favorite color
or a tapestry that reminds you of the energy you are trying to cultivate
Spiritual space is personal.
It should feel meaningful to you.

✨ Working with Deities & Symbolic Imagery
This is also one reason we began offering custom artwork tapestries and spiritual art pieces.
Many lesser-known deities, spirits, folklore beings, and symbolic concepts have very little imagery available commercially.
And sometimes what is available doesn’t feel accurate or respectful to the practitioner working with that energy.
So when someone comes searching for a representation of a deity or concept important to them, we can work together to create something meaningful and personal for their sacred space.
Honestly, I love this process.
There’s something wonderful about helping someone build a spiritual environment that truly resonates with them.
🌿 Benefits of Using Tapestries in Spiritual Spaces
1️⃣ They Create a Strong Focal Point
Tapestries naturally draw the eye and help anchor the energy of a room.
2️⃣ They’re Easy to Care For
Washable, foldable, movable, and apartment-friendly 😄
3️⃣ They Help Reinforce Intention
Symbols, colors, deities, celestial imagery, and sacred geometry all help reinforce the energy you’re trying to cultivate in a space.
4️⃣ They Add Atmosphere Quickly
A tapestry can completely change the feel of a room in minutes.
5️⃣ They’re Flexible
You can:
hang them on walls
use them as altar cloths
meditation backdrops
ceiling hangings
reading corners
or temporary ritual space markers
6️⃣ Custom Work Is Possible
If you connect strongly to a specific deity, concept, or spiritual symbolism, custom artwork and tapestry work can help create something deeply personal.
🌙 Final Thoughts
Sacred space isn’t about perfection.
It’s not about impressing other people.
It’s about creating a place where your spirit feels recognized, comfortable, focused, and at peace.
Sometimes all it takes is one meaningful object to completely change the feeling of a space.
And honestly?
A good tapestry can do exactly that 😄
