The Des Moines New Age Shop Becomes a Film Set

One of the things we've always hoped to create at the Des Moines New Age Shop & Community Center is a place where creativity can thrive.

This weekend, our shop had the honor of serving as the primary filming location for Theater Genesis' entry into this year's 48 Hour Film Project, Keeping the Lights On & the Coffee Full.

Written under the pressure of a 48-hour filmmaking competition, the story came to life right here inside the shop, transforming our familiar space into the backdrop for an original independent short film.

Watching cameras roll, lights come on, and a story unfold within these walls was a wonderful reminder that community spaces can inspire so much more than shopping—they can become places where artists, writers, filmmakers, and dreamers come together to create something meaningful.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone involved with Theater Genesis for their hard work, creativity, and collaboration throughout the weekend.

It was a joy to see our little corner of the community become part of such a fun and memorable project.

Once the competition has concluded, we'll share where you can watch the completed film on the Theater Genesis YouTube channel.

After the 48 Hour Film Project competition concludes, Keeping the Lights On & the Coffee Full will also be available as a short story in the Celestial Library through Celestial Imprint Publishing. The written version expands on the film, giving readers even more of the humor, heart, and mystery behind the coffee maker that started it all.
